The crash took place around 2:25 a.m., Tuesday, May 5 in Fairfield County when Bridgeport Police Officer Ferdinand Ferrao while responding to a commercial burglary alarm in Bridgeport, said Scott Appleby, director of the city's Office of Emergency Management.

According to Appleby, Ferrao was dispatched to Price Right on Main Street for a commercial alarm. Just 15 minutes earlier, officers had responded to another commercial alarm and found an actual break-in.

When responding, Ferrao was traveling northbound on Main Street, approaching the intersection of Woodside Avenue when an identified vehicle, which was traveling southbound attempted to make a left turn onto Woodside Avenue partially blocking Ferrao, causing him to swerve and lose control, Appleby said.

Ferrao crashed into a light pole at the Northeast corner.

The unknown vehicle did stop momentarily, but then fled the scene eastbound on Woodside Avenue before any officers could make contact with the driver, police said.

The Bridgeport Fire Department, AMR, and the Bridgeport Police Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene.

Ferrao was transported to St Vincent's Hospital by AMR and treated for minor non-life threatening injuries and was released.

Bridgeport Police Traffic Division Officer Benita Bailey is leading the investigation.
